what is holistic health coaching?

According to the American Fitness Professionals Association, “Holistic Health Coaches use an integrative approach to diet and lifestyle changes in order to improve their clients’ health. A Holistic Health Coach moves on step beyond simple health coaching by recognizing that there is more to overall health than just diet and exercise. A Holistic Health Coach evaluates their clients’ physical, social, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing to come up with last plans to change behaviors and boost their clients’ overall health.”

What can I expect?

Through your experience with Emily, you’ll develop a collaborative relationship as she educates and guides you to achieving optimal wellness. She utilizes positive psychology by using client strengths to encourage behavior change. She will work with you on habit reversal and change to promote more sustainable lifestyle behaviors that restore wellness. Through nutrition, exercise, stress management, self care, gut health, hydration, and sleep, Emily will equip you with the knowledge necessary to understand HOW and WHY these components are game changers for your health. Emily, as your partner in accountability and your own personal wellness enthusiast, will offer you motivation to set forth confidently in achieving your realistic, attainable goals.

Why is holistic health coaching important?

According to AFPA, “On an average doctor’s office visit, a patient spends only about 10-12 minutes actually speaking to their doctor. A patient often leaves the doctor’s office with information, but information doesn’t translate into behavior changes. Doctors and nurses are trained in delivering an expert model
of care, but not necessarily in explaining and encouraging long-lasting behavioral changes in order to lower stress or increase daily sleep.

According to the CDC, preventing chronic disease can be achieved by:

  • Abstinence from smoking

  • Engagement in regular physical activity

  • Consumption of little to no alcohol

  • Maintenance of normal body weight

  • Proper sleep hygiene

  • Balance and health-sustaining nutrition

Unfortunately, only about 6.3 percent of Americans engage in all five of these behaviors, which is why chronic disease is plaguing us all. This is why the role of a health coach is so crucial. Helping clients change their physical, spiritual, psychological, and social habits is difficult, but with the right training, tools, and experience, things can turn around.”

“One size does not fit all.” What does that mean?

Time and time again, industries are marketing dietary approaches to wellness that offer overgeneralized claims that every product will work for every individual. Unfortunately, for the consumer, this leads to money lost and long term failure as it relates to their health goals. While working with Emily, she believes in the idea of support you where you are, within your specific circumstances .

What is functional nutrition?

Emily is a Functional Nutrition Expert, certified through MindBodyGreen. She utilizes this knowledge and expertise in the work that she does with clients — utilizing nutrition in a functional way to support many health conditions involving the mind and body. According to MindBodyGreen, “functional nutrition is a nutritional philosophy that looks at the body as a whole and focuses on the root causes of a condition rather than an isolated set of symptoms.” As a functional nutrition expert, Emily can explore nutrition for improved heart health, brain health, gut health, thyroid health, hormone health, and more.

why is emily’s approach different than others?

Emily approaches wellness in a way that is most accessible and digestible, regardless of where you are on your wellness journey. Emily uses this philosophy with clients: meet yourself where you are and take an inch. This means that it is imperative to your progress that we begin at step 1, and build a foundation until you reach step 50, 100, or wherever it is that you want to go. The expectation that you will ascend from step 1 to step 26 overnight is oftentimes the marketing approach to many common wellness programs out there. This ‘overnight success’ mentality, which steps away from any potential for sustainable change, is harmful. Instead, Emily knows that starting with the basics, solidifying your foundation, establishing healthful habits, and finding a rhythm that works for you and your circumstances is essential. This is where we begin. From there, we can expand, we can challenge, we can grow, we can feel better.

Emily also operates from the lens of both physical and mental health, as the two are one in the same. You are only making your way 50% if you are not considering how your physical health is impacted by your mental health, and vice versa. Emily feels confident that it is through this intersection, through the mind body, that true vitality can be achieved.

ARE YOUR PROGRAMS ‘WEIGHT LOSS’ PROGRAMS?

While weight loss can be a byproduct of working together, it is not a primary focus. In our world, we tend to be hyper fixated on the number on the scale and ‘weight loss’ as a whole that we lose sight of what it means to be ‘healthy.’ Furthermore, with this focus, we are at risk of resorting to unhealthy weight loss mechanisms in order to achieve a ‘goal weight,’ completely damaging our health along the way. Health and wellness is so much more than just weight loss. Stepping away from the focus on weight loss, and leaning into development of more health-sustaining, long term lifestyle habits, you can achieve all your goals — weight loss and all, but in a healthier, sustainable, more realistic way.
